Men’s Tennis Sweeps Alvernia - Stevens Institute of Technology Athletics

READING, Pa. (March 27, 2021)  – For the second straight week, the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s tennis team swept both singles and doubles en route to a 9-0 victory. This week, the impressive decision came against Alvernia University Saturday in a non-conference match played on the Governor Mifflin High School Tennis Courts.

After dropping 18 points in their season-opening victory over FDU-Florham one week ago, the Ducks were perhaps more impressive in their victory over the Golden Wolves, dropping just two total points on the afternoon in moving to 2-0 on the season. Alvernia fell to 0-2. It is believed to be the first meeting between the programs.

“Our guys competed with class today and took care of business on the court,” said head coach Steve Gachko. We are looking forward to building upon today’s success as we prepare for next week’s matches.”

The Ducks opened the day strong, sweeping doubles play with identical 8-0 decisions in each flight. Seniors Keegan Morris and Gabriel Sifuentes picked up the first victory of the day, and their second of the season, over Tommy Figurelli and Christopher Lazdins at second doubles. First-year Aashi Kulakarni and junior Marc Feliu matched the score at first doubles, while the junior tandem of Garrett Kincaid and Mark Pabalan won by the same score at No. 3 doubles to complete the sweep.

It was Kulakarni that opened scoring at singles, earning a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Figurelli for his second victory of the season. Morris followed with the match-clinching victory at first singles, defeating Mike Brophy 6-0, 6-1.

Feliu and Sifuentes earned shutout wins at second and fourth singles to push Stevens’ lead to 7-0, with Pabalan and Li capping the victory with wins at fifth and sixth singles. The wins by Sifuentes and Pabalan marked the first singles victory of the season for each student-athlete.

Up Next: The Ducks welcome Eastern University to Hoboken on Mar. 31 for what is believed to be the first meeting between the programs. The action gets underway at 1 p.m. It is the final non-conference matchup for men’s tennis.
