ALBANY, N.Y. — MVP Health Care and The Legal Project recently announced a partnership to offer older adults free legal assistance on a variety of issues. The Elder Law Assistance Program, powered by a $260,000 grant from MVP, helps people over the age of 55 navigate complicated legal questions, draft living wills, assist with guardianship determination, support estate planning, assist with end-of-life document preparation, understand Medicaid and Medicare eligibility, and many more legal issues.

Free legal assistance is available to those who meet the age and income eligibility in Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Columbia, and Green counties.

“MVP Health Care and The Legal Project have a mutual commitment to be the difference for our customers and the communities we serve. Low-income older adults and supporting caretakers, are often vulnerable to deteriorating mental and physical health due to unnecessary stress and anxiety caused by navigating the legal system,” MVP Health Care’s President and CEO Chris Del Vecchio said in a recent news release. “Our partnership with The Legal Project will work towards closing a critical gap in services for older adults while providing peace of mind and supporting their overall wellbeing.”

Through the Elder Law Assistance Program, an attorney, provided by The Legal Project, will help low-income older adults and their caretakers receive legal services that could otherwise be cost-prohibitive. Without the assistance of an attorney to understand and protect their rights, it is common for older adults to be unable to access services or lose assets that could have been preserved.

“The legal system can often be a bewildering process for seniors and their families,” Executive Director of The Legal Project Michele Pollock Rich said in the news release. “The Elder Law Assistance Program will provide compassionate, expert legal assistance for older adults who would not have access to these services otherwise. MVP’s support of this project will benefit so many seniors in the Capital Region and I applaud them for their commitment to those in need.”

Assistance through the Elder Law Assistance Project is now available. To learn more about the Elder Law Assistance Project or to make an appointment for a free consultation, call 518-435-1770 .
