Brass, Coweta FORCE to hold forum on mental health legislation

State Senator Matt Brass will hold a forum on House Bill 1013, also known as the Mental Health Parity Act.

The forum will be held Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Coweta F.O.R.C.E’s headquarters, located at 36 Salbide Avenue in Newnan.

Topics for discussion at the Thursday event include how House Bill 1013 will impact communities, peers and their families, and will also include a discussion with the Georgia Council on Substance Abuse, the National Alliance on Mental Illness in Georgia and Mental Health America of Georgia.

The law comes into effect this year, and requires health care insurers to provide coverage for the treatment of mental health and substance use disorders.

According to a release from Coweta F.O.R.C.E, the event is a forum “to explain the details of the bill, inform and equip our community and discuss the positive impact this can have for our community.”

The bill, sponsored by House Speaker David Ralston, R-Blue Ridge, Rep. Todd Jones, R-South Forsyth, Rep. Mary Margaret Oliver, D-Decatur, Rep. Don Hogan, R-St. Simon’s Island, Rep. Sharon Cooper, R-Marietta, Rep. James Beverly, D-Macon and Sen. Brian Strickland, R-McDonough, was unanimously passed by both houses of the Georgia General Assembly and signed into law by Gov. Brian Kemp in April.

The event is free, but registration is required. Registration can be done by visiting eventbrite.com and searching “Newnan State Parity Tour.”
