— We are all going through it right now.

Kashinda Marche said so many issues these days can attack our mental health.

“The mass shootings, the loss and death, the pandemic,” said Marche. “We just have issue on top of issue.”

Marche said in black and brown communities – people do not always feel they can talk about it.

“It is not something that is welcomed at the dinner table,” said Marche.

Marche founded Kreative on Purpose, an organization connecting women and girls to mental wellness.

They hosted an event Saturday at the Doctor Martin Luther King Junior Memorial Gardens in Raleigh, bringing mental health resources and groups to people who may not feel comfortable going somewhere else.

Marche knows because she has been there.

“My mental health journey goes way back,” said Marche.

More than 25 years ago, Marche said she found herself diagnosed with HIV and with a daughter to raise.

“I lost all self-worth. My self-esteem tanked,” said Marche. “I am coming through the storm and I feel fantastic about my life now. I really do.”

And now, her daughter Asia works by her side.

“We want to break these negative cycles,” said Marche.
