New technology coming to the Dothan Police Department

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — New technology was approved for the Dothan Police Department that is aimed at helping the department combat crime within the Circle City.

Dothan city commissioners approved the lease for ten automated license plate reader cameras that will help identify suspects fleeing from a crime.

Dothan’s Mayor, Mark Saliba, wants to make it clear these cameras will not be used for traffic control, but as just another way law enforcement can search for suspects who are on the run.

In addition, the commission also approved to partnership for the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network System. That system will help police track down shooting suspects from bullets collected at a crime scene.

“Those are what we call force multipliers,” Saliba said. “The more smart technology and tools that our law enforcement agencies have to use then it helps to reduce the number of police officers that you have to have.”

Mayor Saliba adds that these new technologies are just another way the city is dedicated to making sure DPD is equipped with the latest and greatest. This, in turn, will help keep the Circle City safe and protected.
