Suicide attempts and self-injury among young people leading to hospitalization increased by 45% between the first half of 2019 and the same period in 2021, according to the Children’s Hospital Association, News staff writer Julie Riddle reported in Monday’s edition of The News.

That jump followed suicide rates among U.S. youth aged 10 to 24 increasing by 57% between 2007 and 2018, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Riddle reported.

A new nonprofit aims to do something about those kinds of statistics.

The Sunset Project will support the creative work of young people via the Sawyer J. Boyd Creatives Grant, which will buy supplies to help grantees achieve their artistic goals. Supplies can range from a camera for a photographer to tools for a woodworker, Riddle reported.

Project founders hope to expand to art competitions and in-school mental health awareness programs next year.

The goal, the nonprofit’s founders say, is to let creative young people see that they are valued and embraced for who they are.

With statistics like the ones mentioned above plaguing our young people, we wholeheartedly support any effort to embrace and support them.

We’re thrilled to see a new effort underway to do just that, and we’re excited to see what the unique focus on artistic endeavors can do to help our young people thrive.

Congratulations to the founders of the Sunset Project, and good luck in your future efforts.
