Flu cases on the rise as COVID-19 cases decline, local health experts weigh in

WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. – As COVID-19 cases are on the decline and masks are coming off,  experts warn not to let your guard down just yet as case of the flu are now on the rise.

We checked in with local health officials to see if that was the case here on the shore.

The CDC estimates that so far this season there have been over 3 million flu cases in the U.S.  Those with the Wicomico County Health Department tell 47ABC they’ve also seen that increase.

Health officials say it’s not uncommon to see cases later in the season and reasons for the current spike could be due to the focus on COVID -19, as symptoms of both illnesses are similar.  “A lot of people when they present with symptoms everybody’s first thought was COVID,” Wicomico County Health Department’s Olivia Butler said.

“There maybe a similar trend in the community where people were more concerned about getting their COVID vaccine and not necessarily getting a flu shot.”

Experts say flu vaccines typically become available in late summer or the end of August and are available at your local pharmacy or doctor’s office. Once you get that shot, we’re told you should be covered until the end of that current season.

Experts also advise to keep an eye on these symptoms which include fever, coughing, body aches, and more.
