- Smith’s second PGA Tour win of the year is the biggest of his career, capturing the tournament referred to by many as golf’s unofficial fifth major. Smith’s wedge play was again key, with his recovery from the 72nd fairway minimising the damage of finding the water at the last. The first player to win with Titleist’s latest Vokey SM9 wedges, the Queenslander uses fairly low bounce options throughout is four wedges that he has honed on the TPC Sawgrass practice areas where he works on his game regularly.
It was Smith’s putting that was the key element throughout the week at The Players, where he became the fifth Australian to win the title alongside, Jason Day, Adam Scott, Steve Elkington and Greg Norman. The 28-year-old uses a blade Scotty Cameron design that features a small slant neck helping to create more of an arcing stroke that led to 42 one putts over the course of the week.
Smith’s win is the seventh from nine events on the PGA Tour in 2022 for Titleist golf balls. The brand also used to win on the PGA Tour of Australasia and LPGA Tour this week.
