Large water main break being repaired after blocking traffic near 62nd St. Bridge


A big water main break, which sent water flooding into Butler Street near the 62nd Street Bridge in Pittsburgh on Thursday afternoon, is undergoing repairs.Watch video from Sky 4 over the water main break: Click the video player above.Sky 4 video showed water gushing from a large hole in the road in the Upper Lawrenceville/Morningside area of the city.Charlene Lynch with Pittsburgh Collision described what was seen from across the street.“One of the workers was inside the wash bay, and they heard this explosion, and they came out, and there was 12 feet of water shooting in the air on the sidewalk, and all of a sudden water just exploded,” Lynch said.The water was flowing from the road and spilling down a nearby hillside toward Tree Pittsburgh. “We never dreamed that we would be flooded from the top, you know. Being a site on the river, we always know that there’s a chance that we could get flooded from the Allegheny River but never from Butler Street,” executive director of Tree Pittsburgh, Danielle Crumrine said.Crumrine said 10% of Tree Pittsburgh’s property was flooded.“Our whole site is about five acres, and there’s at least a half an acre underwater right now, just beyond our tree nursery space,” Crumrine said.One of Pittsburgh Collision’s garages was flooded.“The force of the water had collapsed the garage door. There was probably about four feet of water inside,” Lynch said.Around 7:30 p.m., officials said the water main break has been contained.Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority officials said crews will work continuously until repairs on the 42-inch water main are completed.“I’m really worried about erosion about the riverbank, it’s not the most stable type of space, so we are afraid that some of the trees might fall, as well as some of the equipment that we have down there could fall into the river,” Crumrine said.PWSA officials said 6062-6068 Butler Street have no water service and have been notified.Public Safety officials said Butler Street is closed between 57th Street and 62nd Street.
