Dr. Mookherjee talks steps for women to improve heart health

March is women’s history month, and In Focus is focusing on women’s health. Overall physical health, reproductive health, and financial health. And one of the keys to staying healthy is maintaining a healthy heart. Dr. Suzie Mookherjee is a cardiologist at Albany Medical Center and Regional Board Member for the American Heart Association. She says heart disease isn’t something that only affects older people. Even women in their twenties can be affected.

But prevention is key, and there’s no time like the present to make a change if one is needed.

Experts say heart disease is 80% preventable. A healthy, balanced diet and 30 minutes of exercise can make a huge difference for people looking to prevent heart disease, but also those who are already having cardiovascular complications. And in the case that a heart attack does happen, it’s important to know the signs. Heavy pain in the chest is a red flag, but shortness of breath, pain in one or both arms, nausea, sweating, dizziness and even just unusual fatigue can all be red flags. When in doubt, get it checked out. Dr. Mookherjee says you can never be too careful when it comes to your heart.
