Homeowner shoots, kills 'disoriented' man breaking into Sarasota residence, deputies say

The family of a 29-year-old man said he was experiencing mental health issues and was disoriented before he tried to break into a Sarasota home, where the homeowner shot and killed him, deputies said.

Sarasota County deputies said the deadly shooting occurred late Tuesday night at the home in the 4500 block of 47th Street in Sarasota.

Around 11:04 p.m., deputies responded to a separate home before the shooting in the 4100 block of 47th Street after receiving a medical call regarding the 29-year-old man. According to his family, they dialed 911 due to recent mental health issues. They also said he appeared disoriented on Tuesday, the sheriff’s office reports.

However, before deputies arrived, they said he fled the home. By 11:17 p.m., deputies received a report of the shooting less than half a mile away. The homeowner dialed 911 after the man tried to break into his home.

“The victim reportedly shot him in self-defense,” deputies said.

It doesn’t appear that the homeowner and suspect knew each other, detectives said.
