A 34-year-old Auburn man has been arrested in connection with the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.Sean Michael McHugh is accused of pushing a metal sign into Capitol Police officers and spraying them with a yellow chemical spray, according to the Justice Department. McHugh was arrested Thursday and faces charges that include assault on law enforcement with a deadly or dangerous weapon, obstruction of justice, and physical violence on Capitol grounds, according to a DOJ release. According to court documents, McHugh was on the Lower West Terrace and allegedly heard yelling at officers “you’re protecting communists” and “there is a Second Amendment behind us, what are you going to do then?”He allegedly encouraged others to “engage in disruptive and disorderly conduct” and is accused of pushing a “large metal sign” into a line of uniformed police officers while yelling into a megaphone, “Put it up there! Put it up there!”Video also allegedly shows him shooting officers “with a yellow spray.””Other footage captures the spray bottle, which McHugh holstered at his right hip,” court documents say.McHugh made an initial court appearance in the Eastern District of California on Friday. About 440 people have so far been arrested on charges stemming from the attack on the Capitol, including 125 who are charged with assault or impeding law enforcement, the Justice Department said.
