New restrictions for Victoria after new locally acquired case; 375,000 residents without power in Qld

Victoria has reduced private household gatherings to five people after a new locally acquired case of COVID-19 was detected on Tuesday. Health officials revealed a man in his 60s tested positive after household contact with another case.

Victorian chief health officer Brett Sutton confirmed the detected strain was the B1617 “double mutant variant” currently wreaking havoc across India.

“It’s by no means one to be complacent about,” Professor Sutton told media on Tuesday morning, urging anyone who was present at the state’s recent list of exposure sites to get tested.

“The easiest measure is to wear a mask. All those other behaviours that we talk about, being tested and isolating will do most of the heavy lifting here. But the other restrictions really relate to the fact that transmission happens in the private setting.”

The state’s tally has now risen to five.

Face masks are now mandatory indoors across the Greater Melbourne area, and public gatherings must not exceed 30 people. Masks are required to be worn in all indoor workplaces across the city.

“Victoria has done a better job than anywhere in the world,” Professor Sutton continued. “Victorians know exactly what to do.”
