Nevada DMV refunding $1 technology fee

CARSON CITY, Nev. (KOLO) -The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles will issue refunds to people who paid a $1 technology fee to the DMV after the Nevada Legislature extended the fee.

The Nevada Supreme Court ruled Thursday that the legislature needs a two-thirds majority to pass tax increases and other revenue-generating measures.

Nevada Republicans sued after the 2019 Nevada Legislature extended the DMV technology tax ad payroll taxes that were supposed to sunset. The measures passed with majority votes, but not super-majority votes.

The DMV said Friday it is working out plans to refund the money but had no timeline yet. It advised people to make sure their addresses are correct by going to https://dmvnv.com/onlineservices.htm.

The DMV collects about $7 million a year. The payroll taxes reportedly collect about $98 million a year.
