Summary

This position will be an integral part of the AARP Enterprise Strategic Relationships team and the cross-enterprise Technology & Digital Equity issue area team. This role is responsible for proactively identifying and evaluating key strategic partners that deliver long-term profitable growth and social impact across AARP and its subsidiaries with specific focus on the technology, gaming, and media spaces. They will serve as a chief architect of our collaborative work with the industry and academia to move the needle on digital equity for older adults. More broadly, they will identify strategies that take into consideration AARP’s long-term business objectives and the competitive/business environment.

The Enterprise Strategic Relationship team plays a critical role in partnership planning and development by aligning AARP’s strategy with partners and alliances to create positive social change and increase the bottom line. This role is also responsible for managing a portfolio of clients while also identifying and securing new relationships. Working across AARP, this role aligns existing partnerships and serves as a primary POC for the enterprise. This position reports to the Vice President of Enterprise Strategic Relationships and will work closely with the Enterprise Lead for the Technology & Digital Equity issue area.
Responsibilities

Building and Delivering Proactive Relationships: Grow, steward and develop a portfolio of partnerships (new and existing) with leading multi-national corporations, non-profits/foundations, and academic institutions in the tech industry aligned with AARP Technology & Digital Equity strategy. Expand partnering possibilities through meaningful dialogues and develop a consortium of leading organizations to catalyze the space. Lead and develop the partnering approach/strategy and participate in negotiation of partner agreements with AARP teams and legal. Shape business development opportunities and other growth strategies, including inclusive design workforce training programs tailored to industry and academia.

Fostering Collaboration Across the Enterprise: Work across the enterprise (AARP, AARP Foundation, AARP Services Inc., OATS) to align organizational goals, partner objectives, consumer/member needs, and impact work to move the needle on technology access and digital equity for older adults. Identify areas of white space for AARP to be an industry catalyst for inclusive design practices.

Expanding AARP Partner Ecosystem: Lead and develop strategic recommendations through rigorous analysis, marketplace evaluation, consumer insights, and understanding of AARP strategic priorities. Accountable for driving partnership value and ensuring one AARP voice in our approach. Identify unmet needs, goals, opportunities and challenges in existing partner relationship/structure and creating a strategic plan to drive value. Maintains and utilizes a working knowledge of significant developments, trends and best practices in the intersection of technology and aging.

Stakeholder Management: Cultivate excellent working relationships with senior technology and academic leaders in a way that can inspire collective action. Help identify and recruit additional cross-sector stakeholders. Ensure alignment with other AARP initiatives to leverage knowledge and impact in alignment with AARP strategy. Develop and manage a workplan and approach, deliverables, milestones and priorities to create a working group of externals to help shape the marketplace.

Portfolio Management: Actively manage a pipeline of new opportunities and clearly articulate the goal of each partnership and its value to the organization. Track, analyze and review commitments and required actions of partners and AARP and course correct if needed. Develop and manage partnership framework to help shape legal agreements and ensure clear understanding of the agreements by internal teams.
Requirements

  • BA/BS degree with 10 years of strategic partnership experience is required; 7 years of strategic partnership experience may be considered with an MBA/Master’s degree
  • Strong relationship skills for dealing with a range of partners and industries, with specific experience building partnerships in the technology space. Ability to build strong relationships (internally and externally), identify matching synergies and secure desired commitments.
  • Experience in creating and executing partnerships that rely on creative financing mechanisms.
  • Sound understanding of computer systems, networks or IT operations
  • Ability to communicate clearly and articulately both internally and externally
  • Demonstrated analytical experience in developing, collecting, analyzing and reporting key metrics to partners (internally and externally)
  • Experience working in a matrixed environment
  • Experience in contracting and/or negotiation required
  • Strengths as a creative thinker, problem-solver, builder and negotiator of win-win outcomes
  • This position is based in Washington, DC but must be willing to travel to existing and potential partner sites and/or other organizational related events (up to 50% travel)
