South Main residents fed-up with car break-ins – FOX13 News Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Thieves are breaking into cars in one part of the city so often it has almost become routine, and residents there are getting fed-up.

In-home surveillance video taken several weeks ago outside a home in the South Main portion of downtown, multiple people can be seen shining flashlights into one car and rummaging through another. It shows what police said are thieves breaking into multiple cars.

In one clip, a person is seen running down the street holding a large item to get in a car and drive away.

In two separate incidents recorded on April 16, police took reports from two victims, showing one of the victims had more than $650 worth of electronic equipment stolen.

That same night, according to the reports, someone on the same street reported an iPhone 12, valued at $1300, was stolen from their car after someone broke in.

One resident spoke about the break-ins on the condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation.

“It makes me feel upset and angry,” he said.

He said the break-ins date back more than 18 months when he said someone stole a 9mm handgun from his car.

He said his car was hit around the same date as the other two, a third time for him.

Of the issue, he said, he wants to see more police visible.

“I used to be the type of person that believed that was just a dog whistle for racism, but it’s absolutely not true. I’m sick of it as a downtown resident,” he said.

Until that happens, he said, he’s planning to move from Memphis, upset with the issue that he sees not ending anytime soon as police, so far, has announced no arrests.
