Wausau first responders have new life-saving technology

WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW) — Some of Wausau’s finest now are introduced to a more efficient way to keep people on their feet longer.

“There’ll be people walking and talking in Wausau that wouldn’t have been prior to this,” says Joe Powell, one of the leaders of this project, who came to Wausau all the way from California to help with training Friday.

The machines are called “advanced cardiac resuscitation” devices, or ACR.
They allow crews to not have to physically perform CPR on someone in cardiac arrest, making at least one more person available at a given time.
Today’s training was certainly necessary.

“There’s always a learning curve to it,” says Jared Thompson, Wausau EMS Division Chief. “But once you learn it, they are very user-friendly, and [they provide] the best chest compressions for a patient that has suffered a sudden cardiac arrest,” Thompson says.

Powell says what distinguishes these machines from any other like it is they do “perfect” chest compressions, which falls right in line with the primary goal of saving lives.

“These devices and the way that we are treating our patients, it has shown that it’s going to increase their chance of surviving,” says Thompson.

The Wausau Fire Department says it’s confident in its first responders and know they’ll be ready to help you when you need it most.
