Australia to consider India flights ban; WA coronavirus lockdown ends; PM warns social media can be ‘used by the evil one’; Sydney’s air quality ‘extremely poor’ as hazard reduction burns continue

Western Australia will need a high rate of testing for ongoing restrictions to lift further this weekend, Premier Mark McGowan has warned.

Perth and the Peel region emerged from a snap three-day lockdown at midnight, but some restrictions remain.

Mr McGowan said 8433 tests were conducted yesterday, making a total of 37,396 since Friday.

However, he said testing had dropped off since Sunday.

“For us to open up further on Saturday, we need to have continuing tests,” he said.

“We need to be confident.”

So far, 368 close contacts of the recent community cases have been identified, with 255 having returned a negative COVID-19 test result, and all in self-quarantining.

From 797 casual contacts, 417 negative test results have been returned.
