Olympics committee bars overseas spectators for summer games

TOKYO, Japan (KWWL) — The 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games will open this summer without overseas spectators, ogranizers said early Saturday.

Multiple large media oulets are reporting the decision after a joint meeting betwween olympic committees, the Japanese government, Tokyo government, and local organizers.

Reportedly, such a move was expected and rumored for several months. It also underscores the continued impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Officials saying the risk was too great to admit overseas fans.

For months, polls showed the Japanese public as opposed to the games happening this summer.

Olympic officials now have another big challenge as they prepare for the games, refunding roughly a million tickets that were sold to spectators outside of Japan.
