Health director: Coventry making good progress in COVID battle | Coventry

COVENTRY — The town is making good progress in the fight against COVID-19 and is ahead of the state average in administering vaccinations among eligible residents, Eastern Highlands Health District Director Robert Miller told the Journal Inquirer Monday.

“The state has seen a steady decline over the past four weeks and Coventry has plateaued and declined, which is good news for the community,” Miller said.

As of Friday, Connecticut stood at a 2.58% daily positivity rate.

The town is averaging a 4.4% positivity rate over a 14-day span, Miller said, making the important distinction that state averages are based on a single day and should not be compared to the 14-day town average.

So far, Coventry has inoculated about 69% of their residents who are 75 years old and older with the first dose of the vaccine. The state averages just over a 50% vaccination rate for the two-dose immunization, he said.

Miller said the health district and the state Public Health Department continue to work with senior center staff in Coventry for outreach efforts and to set up appointments for senior residents.

“While this office is heartened to see prevalence of cases declining, and the decline appears to be continuing, it’s still essential and vitally important that residents stay vigilant in practicing COVID-10 precautions that include washing your hands, wearing a mask, maintaining a physical separation from others outside of your household and staying home from work if you’re experiencing symptoms — now more than ever — for us to preserve our progress made in flattening the curve in this pandemic,” Miller said.

The health district is administering the Moderna vaccine in two doses, 28 days apart.

Residents can schedule an appointment by calling the state COVID Vaccine Appointment Assist Line at 877-918-2224. Representatives are available daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
