The Winter Weather Advisory has been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning as confidence grows on heavy snow.

The criteria for a Winter Storm Warning is generally more than 6 inches of snow in a 12-hour time period. It appears that much of southeast Lower will get at least 6 inches of snow from this evening through noon Tuesday, when the snow winds down.

Winter Storm Warning in pink for the heaviest snow, and Winter Weather Advisory in purple.

The pink area is the newly-issued Winter Storm Warning area, and includes Ann Arbor, Detroit, Oakland County, Flint, all of the Thumb except Tuscola County, and the southern border counties.

The Winter Storm Warning effective time gives you a really good feel for the period of heaviest snow. The warning is in effect from 6 p.m. tonight to noon Tuesday. The northern warning area of Genesee County and the western parts of Huron and Lapeer Counties can plan on 5 to 8 inches of snow. Southeast Lower, including Ann Arbor and Detroit can plan on 6 to 9 inches of snow.

So get set for a good old-fashioned heavy February snow. It’s not an extreme snowfall, but it will make dangerous driving tonight and Tuesday morning.
