Altru Family YMCA to launch Health Trip 2021 wellness program

The annual program, which begins Feb. 8, will include workout tips, nutritional and self-care information and Zoom workouts.

The cost is $15 per person.

Participants are encouraged to make lifestyle changes and increase their physical activity, while tracking their progress on a map, to better their overall health, said Adam Sorum, the YMCA’s healthy living director.

Health Trip is aimed at “helping people change habits as we go into the new year,” he said.

This year, the YMCA is partnering with Altru Health System to offer nutrition sessions to help participants make better dietary choices, Sorum said.

Instead of the printed maps and log books that were used in the past, participants will track their progress virtually on a map that reflects their workouts, making better food and drink choices, not smoking and taking time for themselves.

A prize is awarded to those who made it halfway on the map, and a T-shirt is given to those who complete the map.

Sponsoring organizations and businesses, which are listed on the map, will offer discount codes or digital coupons. A few gift cards will be given away in drawings.

Participants will receive extra points by visiting the sponsors and using their discount codes, since one of the goals of Health Trip this year is to support businesses adversely affected by the pandemic.

In addition to the Altru Family YMCA, other Health Trip sponsors include Grand Forks Public Schools, Pita Pit, See Dick Run, Impact Nutrition, Ely’s Ivy, Boss Pizza and Chicken, Natural Grocers, Rhombus Guys Pizza and XL93.

Health Trip is over 25 years old and has had up to 1,200 participants, Sorum said. After a short break, the program was revived in 2020.

Participants may register online or by phone and are invited to form teams.

To register, go to www.gfymca.org or call (701) 775-2586.
