East coast braces for heatwave conditions; Nearly half of all Aussies oppose changing Australia Day; US hits 25 million COVID cases


Heatwave conditions across south-eastern states will continue today, with temperatures in some areas forecast to reach into the 40s.

Typically for a heatwave, the hottest areas have been across the interior, the past three days averaging a maximum of 44C at Marree in South Australia, 43.4C at Birdsville in Queensland and 42C at Smithville in NSW.

Sydney yesterday had its hottest spell since last summer, averaging a maximum of 33C for the past three days. With a hot few days ahead, the city is on target to achieve its hottest spell in 10 years, likely averaging at least 33C for five days.
