No one injured during Nederland bear break-in Friday night

No one was injured Friday night after a bear broke into a home in the 1500 block of Lazy Z Road in Nederland, near the Nederland Equestrian School.

Boulder County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jason Shatek said the homeowners returned home and found claw marks on the trim of the door, blood and damage to a wall. Deputies responded to the home to investigate about 8 p.m. The bear was nowhere to be found.

“We were able to determine pretty quick, based on the evidence, that it was a bear,” Shatek said. “You could kind of see the claw marks in some of the trim where the bear got back out.”

The door to the home was locked, but had a handle that could be pushed down. Authorities think the bear was able to pull the handle down and force its way inside the home. Shatek said they are not sure how the bear was injured. Deputies aren’t currently looking for the bear, he said.

Shatek said the homeowners took the right precautions to protect themselves against a bear’s entry. He reminded people to lock their doors and their trash.
