Why prioritizing mental health and conversations around it are important

(WBNG) — During the coronavirus pandemic, experts say it’s important to prioritize mental health and the conversation surrounding it.

The American Foundation of Suicide Prevention says talking more about mental health may help those who already struggle.

They say that during the pandemic, they have seen more people use resources like calling help lines or speaking with professionals via tele-health.

“Because we’re talking about mental health and how the pandemic has affected our mental health, it is easing that stigma of reaching out,” explained Karen Heisig, Associate Area Director for Central and South Central New York Chapters at the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention, adding, “Tele-health has made it easier for people to access the help that they need.”

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention highlights both local and national resources, such as BC Safe, calling 2-1-1, or visit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s site.

National hotlines include calling 800-273-8255.

AFSP says it’s important to pay attention and check in on your loved ones, especially at a time when they say there is a lot of divisive and overwhelming news.
