M1 updates as 2 crashes at junctions 21 and 35 cause long delays
Traffic has been temporarily stopped on the M1 heading south due to a crash.
Delays are building between Junction 20 and 21 following the incident on Monday morning (January 11).
Highways England reports there are 4.5 miles of congestion slowing journeys by 40 minutes.
Shortly before 8am, Highways England tweeted: “The M1 southbound Junction 21 (M69 Coventry A5460 Leicester) to Junction 20 (A4303 Lutterworth Rugby) traffic has been temporarily stopped due to a collision.
“Congestion building on the approach. Updates to follow.”
It added: “Please be aware that there are delays of over 40 minutes on the approach to this collision on the M1 southbound between Junction 21 and Junction 20 in Leicestershire.
“There is approx. 4.5 miles of congestion on approach to the incident. Please allow extra time for your journey this morning.”
Elsewhere on the motorway, there has been a multi vehicle crash on the M1 northbound in South Yorkshire between J35 and J36 near Rotherham resulting in a full closure of the carriageway.
Emergency services including South Yorkshire Police are in attendance. Highways England Traffic Officers are also attending to assist with traffic management.
Drivers are advised to follow the hollow square diversion and leave to M1 at J35.
