Godron Murray explains the T.50's aerodynamic concept

Development of Gordon Murray Automotive’s T.50 is well underway, with the first mule cars beginning testing in the new year. The company has been charting the process and looking at some of the car’s unique engineering details in a series of short videos.

In this installment, Murray explains the function of the car’s rear mounted, 400mm diameter, electrically driven fan. Murray has a history of using fans as aerodynamic aids, with his now legendary Brabham BT-46 F1 car utilizing such a device to improve downforce. However, the designer is at pains to point out that in the case of the T.50, the fan’s function is more subtle and goes beyond simple downforce geeneration.
