Broome County to stop sending public health statements

Coronavirus GFX 2

(WBNG) — Broome County Executive Jason Garnar announced Wednesday that the Broome County Health Department will no longer public health statements.

County Executive Garnar says it is not a good use of the county’s resources to continue to provide them.

According to Broome County Health Department Director Rebecca Kaufman, most of the COVID-19 spread is from families, places of work and health facilities.

She says people thought new cases were coming from places only named in the health alerts, providing a false sense of safety, despite the fact COVID-19 exposure risk is anywhere.

Kaufman says the department still recommends people do not gather in large groups to slow the spread.

The health alerts informed residents when they may have been exposed to the virus at a public place.
