Bystanders break into burning home, start CPR on man inside

GRAND RAPIDS — Bystanders broke into a burning house Tuesday night trying to save the man inside.

Just before 7 p.m. calls to 911 described heavy smoke coming from a house in the 400 block of Emerald Avenue.

Deputy Chief Todd VanderWall of the Grand Rapids Fire Department told FOX 17 bystanders found the man near the door, pulling him to the porch to start CPR. Rescue crews took over soon after, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

VanderWall says the fire was concentrated in the back of the house near the kitchen and broke into the second floor, but the cause is still under investigation. The man has not been identified yet and it is not known if he was alone in the house when the fire started or how long he had been inside when neighbors arrived.
