At least 27 people were displaced by a Thanksgiving morning blaze which broke out in a home on Washburn Street in New Bedford and spread to three apartment buildings.The preliminary investigation suggests that the blaze was started by someone attempting to deep-fry a turkey, officials said. Thick smoke filled the neighborhood as several homes caught fire around 10 a.m. Thursday. Flames were shooting from the uppers floors of one apartment building in New Bedford when firefighters first pulled up.The blaze soon the fire spread to the buildings on each side.Witnesses said the residents in the middle building had been deep-frying a turkey on their back porch when it exploded.Photos and video from the scene showed firefighters using ladder trucks to access the upper levels of the buildings, spraying water from several positions in an effort to keep the flames at bay.The Red Cross was assisting at least 27 people who lived inside the three separate buildings that were displaced by the blaze. Firefighters say all three buildings are heavily damaged with much of the interiors collapsed.”This may well be a reminder of the perils of frying a turkey,” Jon Mitchell, New Bedford’s mayor said. “This is not the first time this has happened — not just here but in many place across the country.”One person was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. An update on her condition was not immediately available.
