The current growth of the population ages 65 and older, driven by the large baby boom generation, is unprecedented in U.S. history and often referred to as the “Silver Tsunami.”  More than ever, senior adults are working longer, planning on staying independent, and insisting on aging on their own terms. As they have passed through each major stage of life, baby boomers – currently defined as those between ages 56 and 74 – have brought both challenges and opportunities to residential interior design for this ever-growing segment of our society.

“One of the biggest challenges, quite frankly, is that the older we get, the less receptive we are to change, particularly when it comes to new trends in technology,” said Vogue Interiors’ Donna Overly, ASID, CAPS.  “Seniors like me have probably had experiences with their computers or electronic devices that required help from their kids, or better yet, grandkids.  Often, these devices are not intuitive and require knowledge or training to conquer.  There are numerous aspects of technology that are not so obvious.  As an interior designer, it is my responsibility to bring these resources to the table.”

The Silver Tsunami market offers a huge opportunity for the technology, building, and interior design industries.  A broad spectrum of technology developers have seniors in their sights, and have developed solutions that will provide comfort and convenience for current and future needs.

“Innovative control methods have made it easier to understand and simpler to use automated systems,” says Dana Vanatta of Specialty Electronics.  “These advances can be incorporated into countless areas of our living environments.”

Voice or motion activation for pathway or scene lighting addresses both convenience and safety.  Climate control systems, window coverings, privacy equipment, and security and hurricane protection are all important features that can be controlled by voice, motion detection, or simplified remote applications.

Another aspect of planning for the future includes potential applications for robot devices like “Roomba,”  one of the maintenance and convenience assistants that are seemingly coming to market every day.  Safety sensor systems that provide protection in tubs and showers, and adjustable beds that sense body temperatures and positions are designed to provide ultimate comfort.  No-shaft pneumatic residential elevators for ease of access to a second floor when a stairway chair is not an option is a solution for those who contend with mobility issues. Furthermore, the Toilet/Bidet seat is a marvel of technology that provides wash, dry, a seat warmer, and deodorizer, as well as a night light.

Energy efficient and low maintenance items, including induction cooktops, LED lighting, Crypton fabrics and luxurious vinyl plank flooring, can contribute to ease of use.  The application of “NanoSeptic” continuous self-cleaning surfaces offers a cleaning solution based on technology, not toxins.

“State-of-the-art technology is multigenerational and important with regard to aging in place, not only for the senior, but for the family and caregivers as well,” said Overly.  “Incorporating these technologies is equally as essential as the barrier free and accessibility aspects of residential interior design and supports our basic activities of daily life.  Technology will continue to enhance the comfort, convenience, and quality of life for seniors now and into the future.”
