The most ridiculous excuses people have given police for breaking the rules in Wales during the fire-break lockdown

The fire-break lockdown put in place by the Welsh Government is coming to an end on Monday.

The circuit-breaker, which came into force on October 23 has meant that everyone has been required to stay at home.

However, despite this, police forces across Wales have had to deal with people who are flouting coronavirus lockdown rules.

Police checkpoints have also been in place with officers checking essential travel reasons. Gwent Police confirmed that officers stopped more than 500 vehicles on the first weekend of the fire-break lockdown.

Since the introduction of the first national lockdown, Dyfed-Powys Police has been the most proactive force in handing out fixed penalty notices to those travelling on Welsh roads in breach of the restrictions.

Here are some of most ridiculous excuses people have given to police for breaking the rules in Wales during the fire-break lockdown.

Family from Sussex travel to Wales despite being aware of national lockdown and travel ban

Police ‘escorted’ an English family out of a Welsh county after they were spotted driving across the border during the travel ban.

Police said the family had travelled for over five hours for a non-essential reason, despite being aware of the national lockdown in Wales.

English man breaks Welsh lockdown rules to climb Snowdon alone

An English man was found sleeping in his car and he told police he had broke Wales’ lockdown rules to “climb Snowdon alone.”

The man, from the Rotherham area, was found sleeping in his car in a layby in the Conwy Valley.

According to North Wales Police, he told the officer who found him that he was well aware of the “all-Wales Covid lockdown” in place but decided he would chance coming to North Wales as he wanted to climb Snowdon alone.

Woman stopped by police on 320-mile round trip from England Tier 2 area to visit horse in Wales

A woman breached the fire-break lockdown regulations in Wales by travelling 160 miles from a Tier 2 area of England – to visit a horse.

The woman was pulled over by officers from Dyfed-Powys Police last weekend.

When questioned, she revealed she had travelled from the Leicester area Ceredigion – a round trip of around 320 miles – so she could see a horse she owned in the county.

This did not qualify as essential travel and she was given a fixed penalty notice for a breach of the regulations.

Other breaches of Covid restrictions

It wasn’t just motorists who have broken lockdown rules during the fire-break.

Police have also had to deal with several other breaches.

The Welsh Government previously said that the fire-break lockdown will be coming to an end and there are no plans to extend it – despite continued rises in coronavirus cases.
