Health Center cancels walk-up immunizations after National Guard unit goes into quarantine and staffers get virus

There won’t be any walk-up immunizations Wednesday at Flint Hills Community Health Center. That’s because there was an unexpected shift in personnel that developed late Tuesday.

Health Center Director and Lyon County Health Officer Renee Hively tells KVOE News she got unexpected news when the entire Kansas National Guard unit serving the area had to head home.

Plan C included altering some walk-in services provided by the Health Center as well as to shift employees around to meet demand.

Hively says Health Center administrators will meet Wednesday to determine how best to move forward this week with immunizations — or whether to have them at all. Walk-up flu shots, meanwhile, and the coronavirus testing line will continue at this time.

Speaking of Health Center staff, Hively is among those in a “modified quarantine” where essential workers have to wear N-95 masks with a surgical mask over that. They also get temperature checks twice a day.

The National Guard was planning for its last day helping the test line to be Nov. 19. Based on a two-week quarantine, the unit could serve a day or two before getting new assignments but an official plan is pending.
