The university is postponing the start of the spring semester to Jan. 25 and will observe a one-day break from classes on March 17, university President and CEO Kelly Miller said Friday.

The school joins a growing number of universities around the country that are eliminating breaks to keep students and employees from traveling.

“It is a difficult choice but one that is in the best interests of our entire community,” Miller said in a letter to faculty and staff.

After the winter break, the campus will open as planned on Jan. 4. Benefits-eligible employees will receive two floating holidays in place of the spring break holiday, Miller said.
