Gordo: Martinez regains health, reclaims key starting rotation role | Jeff Gordon

“I feel great, I feel strong,” Martínez said at the time. “Let’s see what happens in the next start.”

Little did we know we would have to wait so long for that opportunity.

His next start was supposed to come Aug. 3 against the Detroit Tigers. Instead, his next start didn’t come until Tuesday because of illness.

The global pandemic that shut down the Cardinals for much of August hit Martinez especially hard. “I was three times, four times to the hospital, really sick,” he said after the Cardinals lost 7-3 to the Twins on Tuesday afternoon in the first half of their doubleheader.

“A lot of symptoms, fever, cough, pain over my body. Sometimes I couldn’t breathe.”

On Instagram, Martinez posted a photo of himself while he was hospitalized. At the time he wrote this:

“Today I want to thank God for another chance at life, I am now free of this virus that ends humanity, my God has a tough battle for each one of us and with faith, we can be victorious, I love you my God. Thanks to each of the people who prayed for my health may God pay it back with much equal health, blessings for every human in the world.”

After recovering from COVID-19, he impressed the staff overseeing the alternate training site in Springfield, Mo.
