WATERBURY — A water main break will keep a portion of Thomaston Avenue closed for the next few days while repairs are made to the damaged roadway.

Waterbury Police, fire and Connecticut Water arrived to the area of Thomaston Avenue between Sprague Street and Sheffield Terrace at about 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday where a large stream of water broke through the roadway, causing damage to the road and nearby buildings.

“Over the next few days everyone should expect reduced water pressure and water discoloration throughout the city,” said Mackenzie Demac, chief of staff to Mayor Neil M. O’Leary. “We won’t know what caused the break until we can excavate the pipes.”

Demac said at about 6:10 p.m. crews were able to get the water stopped. He added that there were no injuries reported.

The 50-year-old 42-inch pipes are located about five to six-feet deep into the ground, said Water Superintendent Rob Langenuer.

A portion of the Montambault’s Auto Supply and Service Center was hit with the high pressure water, breaking some windows. The water also caused exterior damage to a storage building and knocked shingles off the roof of a garage located behind Montambault’s.

“Right now we are working on lining up the necessary pieces of infrastructure to excavate and replace the pipes,” said Demac. “The road will remain closed for at least a couple of days. We will move as quickly as we are safely able to.”
