Erie police identify suspect in rash of vehicle thefts, break-ins

Erie police said they have identified a suspect in a crime spree last weekend and that the man is already in custody in Weld County.

Levi Souther, 25, is facing three counts of first-degree vehicle trespassing, two counts of aggravated motor vehicle theft, and one count of theft, according to online court records.

Court records indicate he also has a pending misdemeanor case in Boulder County for driving with a revoked license and a lane usage violation.

Souther is already in custody at the Weld County Jail on numerous charges out of Weld County, but will be transferred to face charges in Boulder County, according to a release from Erie police.

He has not had a court date set yet in his Boulder County case, according to court records.

Around 2 a.m. Aug. 8, Erie police said an officer attempted to contact a person on foot wearing dark clothing around neighborhoods at County Line Road and Erie Parkway, but the individual, now believed to be Souther, eluded the officer.

Police said shortly after, another officer initiated a traffic stop but the driver also eluded the officer. The vehicle was found later, unoccupied, abandoned in a field. The vehicle had been stolen out of Broomfield and had plates which were stolen from Longmont, according to the statement.

Police said there were two reports made about stolen vehicles and three reports of trespasses. The vehicles were unlocked and keys were inside the stolen vehicles. Items taken from the vehicles include garage door openers.

Erie police said in addition to these incidents, evidence has connected Souther to other crimes in the Denver-metro area.

“The Erie Police Department would like to remind residents to continue to be vigilant and practice safety habits at all times by locking vehicles, houses, windows, garages, gates and sheds,” Erie police wrote in a release. “Remember to turn on exterior lights, security cameras and alarm systems, and bring in valuables from vehicles, yards and patios.”
