Massive water main break impacting Springfield | News

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) — A massive water main break in Springfield’s South End has left residents without water and has brought a traffic nightmare.

Crews have been at the scene along East Columbus Avenue all morning.

Water continues to pour down the street, flooding under one of the overpasses from I-91.

Early on in the incident, one care actually got stuck. Since then, roads have been closed down to traffic.

Mass. State Police report that Exit 5 on I-91 north and Exit 4 on I-91 south are both closed.

The water on the roadway is draining pretty quickly in some areas, but in others, the water build-up is deep.

Officials told Western Mass News that almost the entire city of Springfield is without water.

This comes as almost 20 percent of the city is already without power following Tuesday’s storm.

Mayor Domenic Sarno in the city of Springfield has ordered all non-essential city services and municipal buildings to be closed until further notice, because of the water main break and the power outages.

“The City of Springfield would also like to advise residents to shelter in place until further notice, if possible, to allow crews to clean up and repair, and for public health aspects,” said city spokesperson William Baker in a statement.

Ludlow Police told Western Mass News that Springfield Water and Sewer is aware of low water pressure levels that some residents are experiencing. Those impacted are asked not to call the police to report the issue.

It’s not yet known when water will be restored.

Western Mass News will continue to follow this story and will have the latest on-air and online as it becomes available.
