Cognizant names GSA's Cheriyan EVP of strategy and technology

Anil Cheriyan, who up until last week served as the director of the General Services Administration’s Technology Transformation Services, will join Cognizant on Aug. 3 as executive vice president of strategy and technology.

Cheriyan will oversee Teaneck-based Cognizant’s global IT, business development, alliances, strategy and global security teams. He’ll be responsible for informing strategy, digitizing the business, and strengthening IT, and security capabilities and resilience.

At General Services Administration, an independent agency of the United States government, the mission of Cheriyan’s job as the U.S. presidential appointee in charge of Technology Transformation Services was to make the lives of the public better through technology. He drove the technology transformation strategy, roadmap and agenda across the federal government, oversaw a $100 billion technology budget, and worked closely with the White House, agency leadership, and the federal chief information officer.

According to government news website Fedscoop, the TTS assisted the U.S. Small Business Administration with the creation of the web portal for the Paycheck Protection Program, which despite initial bumps and issues delivered billions in economic relief to small businesses around the country in short order.

Prior to his public sector work, Cheriyan served as executive vice president and chief information officer of SunTrust Banks, where he led the bank’s digital, operations and data transformation, advancing its capabilities in cloud, AI/robotics, data and payments. He’s also held senior leadership roles at IBM Global Services and PwC Management Consulting.

Cheriyan will report directly to Cognizant Chief Executive Officer Brian Humphries.

The Economic Times reported that Humphries told employees that this will be the first time a technology leader will be directly reporting to the CEO at Cognizant.
