Traffic alerts on East Bay freeways after fires break out – East Bay Times

Fire crews contained two of four vegetation fires Wednesday afternoon, but were fighting two others that were burning near Interstates 580 and 880.

Three of the fires were in the Livermore area, and the fourth was near Hayward.

The fire near Hayward forced the closure of the eastbound on-ramp to northbound I-880 at the Whipple Road around 2:50 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said. The agency issued an alert for severe traffic on I-880 northbound that was still in effect at 3:30 p.m.

According to Alameda County fire, that fire was spreading slowly and had burned three acres.

In Livermore, a car became engulfed in flames on westbound I-580 just east of the Greenville Road exit, the CHP said. That brought another traffic alert from the agency, and firefighters from Alameda County and the Cal Fire.

That fire began around 2:55 p.m.

Earlier, firefighters had fully contained a two-alarm fire near the Sandia National Laboratory, in the area of South Portal Drive and Thunderbird Lane, by around 1:30 p.m. The blaze burned 28 acres, and there were no reports of injuries or any structures being damaged.

The other fire that crews contained began around 11:15 a.m. in the 19000 block of Mines Road in Livermore and burned 1 1/2 acres. That fire involved some sheds and outbuildings, but authorities did not report any injuries.
