A water-main break Sunday afternoon in Zanesville brought crowds of people to observe water spraying many feet in the air above nearby homes.

Around 2:30 p.m. Zanesville dispatch received calls from concerned neighbors who observed rocks and chunks of dirt being flown into the air by highly pressurized water.

The break occurred along Sheridan Street and quickly flooded the nearby homes and yards. The water could be seen many blocks away.

Zanesville Police were able to get the homeowners out of their residences as water surrounded the properties and caused significant observable damage.

The water pipe, which is believed to be an 18-inch main, threw water high into the air for almost 45 minutes before crews from the Zanesville Water Department were able to safely disconnect the lines.

The damage to the nearby homes and surrounding property is currently unknown as crews work to repair the damaged pipe.

Sheridan Street between Linden Avenue and Bluff Street is currently closed to traffic.
