Groups of '20 to 30 young people' spotted breaking lockdown rules in Hull park

Groups of teenagers have been spotted congregating together at a west Hull park and breaking coronavirus lockdown rules for the second day running.

An image was captured in Pearson Park on Wednesday evening showing “20 to 30 young people” huddled together, in what was branded a “galling” lack of respect by one eyewitness.

But groups of young people were seen in large groups once again on Thursday, including one group hanging out on the outdoor gum equipment which are still out of bounds under the current lockdown rules.

One witness told Hull Live: “There was really bad social distancing. There must have been 15 to 20 youngsters all gathered very close to each other. They were shoulder to shoulder.”

The comments echo similar concerns expressed by another eye witness on Wednesday which was the hottest day of the year so far in Hull. Read more here .

However, the Government’s social distancing rules – which tell people only to meet only one person from another household outdoors and to stay two metres away from them – were clearly flouted by some.

The man, who was taking an evening stroll in the west Hull park, was left “shocked” by his discovery on the same day that East Yorkshire’s coronavirus death toll hit 141.

Describing his early evening walk to take in some fresh air, the man, who wanted to remain anonymous, said: “There were a lot of people in Pearson Park but most were respecting the social distancing rules.

“But I was shocked when I came across such a large group of young people which were clearly not from the same household.

“There must have been 20 to 30 young people in maybe two or three groups but very close together.

“They may feel young and invincible but other people in their family or household may not be so fortunate.”

He was also angry that they would be happy to congregate and potentially pass on Covid-19, which has claimed more than 35,000 lives in the UK as a whole.

“The lack of respect for the rules is galling when so many have died and everyone has had to put up with so much,” he said.

“A day in the sunshine is no excuse for putting lives at risk.”
