Fremont County Coroner Randy Keller identified the man who died in a single-vehicle crash that occurred on Shelf Road near milepost 12 on Saturday.
Samuel Haile, 74, of Cañon City, was driving a 1977 Chevrolet pickup south on Shelf Road at about 12:30 p.m. when it traveled off the left side of the road and down the side of a cliff. The Colorado State Patrol reports that as the Chevrolet traveled downhill, it began overturning and caught fire before it came to rest on its wheels after traveling about 183 feet from the roadway.
Haile was wearing his seatbelt and remained inside the vehicle but was pronounced dead at the scene.
Keller said the crash appears to have been accidental.
Drug and/or alcohol use is not suspected in the crash, which remains under investigation at this time.
