WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A Purdue University alumnus now is using technology his team created to improve school safety to help fight the spread of COVID-19.
Daniel Lee, who received his degree in electrical engineering from Purdue’s College of Engineering, is founder and CEO of Kokomo Solutions, which sells and distributes the KOKOMO24/7 Safety Cloud.
The cloud-based technology is designed to help improve school safety by proactively tackling mental health concerns, bullying and other public safety issues with a predictive analysis powered by an artificial intelligence model. It also has been used by various public sector institutions such as Los Angeles Unified School District and School Police Department and Illinois State Police for incident tracking and response.
Lee and the company have now repurposed the technology to help organizations and communities collect, track and manage COVID-19 cases with contact tracing features.
“I have always felt good about helping schools with public safety and now I’m excited for the opportunity to use this technology during the current pandemic,” Lee said.
The KOKOMO24/7 Safety Cloud and COVID19Tracker platforms each have the same three scalable solutions: anonymous reporting tip-line (ARS), incident reporting (IMS) and emergency operations (EOC) management system.
“As a Boilermaker and an innovator, I know the importance of persistence,” Lee said. “That’s why I didn’t hesitate to develop new ways to use our public safety technology for schools to help save lives during this pandemic by providing an outlet for communities, workplaces and schools to better track and manage their COVID-19 responses.”
Lee said the COVID19Tracker provides solutions for organizations to set up self-reporting lines for their staffs and communities, gather data about infections, and then communicate that information to selected audiences.

Bruce Schechter, who received his degree in physics and mathematics from Purdue and co-founded Silicon Valley Boilermaker Innovation Group (SVBIG), is helping Lee spread the word about the COVID19Tracker.
“I was recently asked to mentor Daniel via the NASDAQ Entrepreneurial Center in San Francisco,” Schechter said. “When I realized that Daniel was a fellow Purdue alumni, my immediate thought was that we need to tap into the Purdue alumni community for additional help and to help us make additional contacts in cities, states, educational institutions and corporations around the U.S.”
