A police patrol car has been pummelled with rocks and bottles after officers were forced to abandon it during an altercation at Murray Bridge, east of Adelaide.

Police were called to a home in the town over reports of a large gathering early on Friday.

When they arrived, they discovered a group of about 20 people who soon became aggressive.

The officers were forced to use capsicum spray to keep the group at bay but retreated when a number of individuals started throwing bottles and rocks at them.

“To avoid injury the patrols had to abandon a police car in the street, which was subsequently damaged by the group throwing rocks and bottles at the vehicle,” police said in a statement.

The vehicle was eventually retrieved, but it was extensively damaged with the front windscreen shattered by a large rock, a rear window smashed and side panels damaged.

Police say no officers were injured in the incident.
