UPDATE (7:29 p.m.) — Gunshots were exchanged between a Rapid City police officer and a male suspect just after 6:30 Wednesday evening near the intersection of E. Saint Patrick St. and East Highway 44.
According to RCPD Chief of Police Karl Jegeris, the officer was performing a routine traffic stop. Police say there were three people in the car when one of the occupants got out and began firing on the officer. The officer returned fire and the suspect was struck. One of the RCPD patrol cars was also struck in the exchange.
No officers were injured in the incident.
The suspect was later transported to Monument Health Rapid City Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Officials have not yet identified the man.
The Division of Criminal Investigation will continue to investigate the shooting.
“I’ll just say that this is something that we train for,” said. Jegeris. “We have the best equipment possible to protect our officers and our staff. We do regular firearms training. We practice encounters at traffic stops and scenario-based training and this is the desired outcome in a situation like this.”
