Burglars on the run after breaking into Houston Museum of Natural Science

A pair of would-be burglars got away emptyhanded after breaking into the Houston Museum of Natural Science early Wednesday morning.

The two broke an outer window near the museum’s Cockrell Butterfly Center and wrapped a chain around an ATM inside the building, police said. They backed a white van on the sidewalk to pull the ATM out of the building, but a Houston police officer hired to protect the museum intervened before they could steal anything.

The officer radioed for backup as the men fled on foot, leaving behind the van, chain and broken glass. Officers surrounded the area and a police K9 tried sniffing them out, but they were nowhere to be found.

None of the museums artifacts and various items were affected, according to a statement from the museum.

Anyone with information is urged to call Houston Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477).
