N. Wilkesboro police arrest man for vehicle thefts, break-ins | News

The North Wilkesboro Police Department charged a man in connection with multiple vehicle thefts and vehicle break-ins.

Terry Ray Hinson, 35, of Welcome Home Baptist Church Road, North Wilkesboro, was arrested on April 21.

North Wilkesboro Investigator Shane Cleary charged Hinson with six counts of breaking into a motor vehicle and two counts each of larceny of a motor vehicle, misdemeanor larceny and injury to real property. He also charged Hinson with hit and run, leaving the scene and causing property damage.

Cleary reported that Hinson broke into a 1982 Chevrolet pickup with a sharp object on April 14 while it was in the Revient Reclaimed Wood parking lot on East Waugh Street, North Wilkesboro. He said Hinson drove the pickup around the building to a dead-end on the Revient property and abandoned it.

The investigator said Hinson then went three blocks away to ATCO Floral, where he found the keys in a 1998 Isuzu box truck and drove that vehicle to 14690 Elkin Highway, Ronda, where he stole a green Dodge Ram pickup.

Cleary said that on April 17, he watched a surveillance video at Friendly Auto Sales on N.C. 268 in North Wilkesboro that showed a white male suspect, identified as Hinson, exiting the stolen Dodge pickup.

He said the video showed the man trying to take gas from a Chevrolet pickup. Cleary said it next showed him taking a dealer license plate from a 2005 Toyota pickup and then entering the Toyota pickup, a 1998 Jeep, 2005 Chevrolet pickup and a 2006 Ford pickup while holding a flashlight.

Cleary said Hinson placed a pair of Mazda exhaust resonators lying outside the building in the back of the Dodge pickup.

Later in the day on April 17, Cleary was dispatched to dead end North Wilkesboro Reservoir Road, off Suncrest Orchard Road, in reference to the stolen Dodge pickup.

Cleary said the pickup, abandoned and blocking the driveway, had the dealer license plate reported stolen from Friendly Auto Sales. He said a checkbook belonging to Oid Melvin Kidd and a check from it written to Hinson were found in the pickup. Kidd is the owner of the Dodge pickup, said Cleary. The exhaust resonators taken from Friendly Auto Sales were found in the bed of the Dodge pickup, he added.

Also on April 17, North Wilkesboro Patrolman Ryan Blair arrested Hinson at Absolute Pawn and Guns on N.C. 268 East.

Cleary said that when he spoke to Hinson on April 20 at the Wilkes County Jail, Hinson signed a form waiving his sixth amendment rights and stated he had “snorted a bunch of methamphetamine” and didn’t remember what he did and didn’t do over the course of several days.

He said he contacted Magistrate Tyler Cleary and obtained arrest warrants for Hinson. The Wilkes Sheriff’s Office served the warrants.
