COVID-19 is altering much of life, including who can support a mother in labor while she’s in the delivery room.

It’s a new reality for pregnant women who may want more than one person with them when they give birth.

On Tuesday, first-time mother Katy Goza gave birth to her baby son, Beckham. Goza and her mother, Joan Elliott, are close. It was always the plan for Elliott, who is a nurse, to be in the delivery room with her daughter. Because of COVID-19, Goza’s husband was the only person allowed in the room.

“When we got there and got settled and I started having contractions and was in pain, that’s when it really hit me that my mom wasn’t there,” Goza said.

The new mother and grandmother said it was difficult being separated, but thanks to technology, Joan stayed in touch with her daughter and husband throughout the labor and delivery.

“I got to FaceTime her and see him for the first time,” Elliott said. “It was a lot of tears, but happy tears.”

Goza said her husband did a phenomenal job supporting her during her delivery. During the COVID-19 crisis, she’s only allowing Beckham’s grandparents to visit him in person. Beckham, who Elliott said is the most precious baby in the world, is named after soccer star David Beckham.
