Roswell schools in running for $3,000 for technology projects

Two Roswell schools could win $3,000 for technology education in Sparklight’s “Dream Bigger” social media campaign.

Roswell Independent School District’s Mesa Middle School and All Saints Catholic School are among the 10 finalists selected by the communications company, according to a Sparklight press release. Submissions were accepted from K-12 schools and organizations throughout the 21 states the company serves.

Public voting will determine which five schools will receive a donation of $3,000. Voting is live at sparklight.com/contest and will end Friday.

As of Tuesday morning, Mesa Middle was third with 232 votes, and All Saints had 44 votes.

In the entry for Mesa, Principal Marcos Franco wrote the school is looking to rebuild its Math, Engineering, Science, Achievement program.

“With limited funding, we are trying to build our program to what it once was. We are wanting to add 3D printers to help with constructing parts, as well as a tool station,” he wrote.

Dennis Pabst, science teacher at All Saints, wrote the school has limited finances for science, technology, engineering and math programs, but looks for opportunities to provide them.

“To excite our students and cultivate their interest in STEM we like to participate in related activities ranging in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math that are grade level and age appropriate; such areas as space, anatomy, coding, electricity, forensic science, math activities and robotics,” he wrote in the school’s entry.

The Catholic school would purchase a self contained-STEM kit for each grade level, Pabst wrote. Students would demonstrate their new-found knowledge and skills at a school-wide science fair for kindergarten through eighth grade.
